John Deere, an American agricultural, construction, and forestry equipment manufacturer, is opening new facilities in the United States and rehiring some of its laid-off workforce. But these moves, make a modest dent in the thousands of U.S. jobs the company has cut in recent years while Deere\u2019s sizable global presence continues to expand.<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, President Donald Trump\u00a0announced<\/a>\u00a0that John Deere will open two new U.S. facilities\u2014a distribution center near Hebron, Indiana, and a manufacturing site in Kernersville, North Carolina.<\/p>\n

According to a\u00a0press release<\/a>\u00a0from Indiana Governor Mike Braun, the company plans to invest US$125 million to construct and equip a 1.2 million-square-foot warehouse and distribution center on 234 acres near Hebron. In North Carolina, Deere is putting\u00a0US$70 million toward expanding its Kernersville plant<\/a>, which will take over excavator production previously based in Japan.<\/p>\n

John Deere estimates that each site will generate about 150 jobs, underscoring the company\u2019s intent to continue driving U.S. innovation and jobs,\u00a0says<\/a>\u00a0John May, Chairman and CEO of John Deere.<\/p>\n

Deere has also pledged to invest\u00a0US$20 billion<\/a>\u00a0in U.S. manufacturing and is reinstating some previously laid-off employees including\u00a0146 employees<\/a>\u00a0in Waterloo,\u00a024<\/a>\u00a0in Dubuque, and\u00a075<\/a>\u00a0in Davenport.<\/p>\n

But the new facilities and limited callbacks make only a modest dent in the significant losses across Deere\u2019s U.S. operations in recent years. John Deere, an American company with\u00a0deep midwestern roots<\/a>, began making substantial lay-offs in October 2023, when the company fired\u00a0225 production employees<\/a>\u00a0from a plant in East Moline, Illinois.<\/p>\n

In 2024, Deere cut\u00a02,167 jobs<\/a>\u00a0across key facilities, including nearly\u00a01,000<\/a>\u00a0in Waterloo and hundreds more in Davenport, Dubuque, Ankeny, Ottumwa, Moline, and East Moline. Layoffs continued into 2025, with\u00a0over 500 workers<\/a>\u00a0let go in Iowa alone.<\/p>\n

Deere says that about\u00a080 percent<\/a>\u00a0of the equipment it sells in the U.S. is manufactured domestically. Nevertheless, its international operations remain integral to its business model and supply chain.<\/p>\n

International markets are a major driver of Deere\u2019s revenue, providing\u00a0nearly half<\/a>\u00a0of its consolidated net sales and revenues. The company employs\u00a075,000 people<\/a>\u00a0worldwide, but more than half are abroad: only\u00a030,000 employees<\/a>\u00a0are located in the U.S.<\/p>\n

The company manufactures equipment and components throughout a\u00a0global network<\/a>, producing backhoes and planting equipment in Brazil, tractor engines and combines in Argentina, crushers and sprayers in Germany, feederhouses in France, cotton harvesters in China, and tractor screens in India.<\/p>\n

And Deere continues to expand internationally, prompting\u00a0scrutiny<\/a>\u00a0over how the company balances U.S. manufacturing with global production. The company recently announced that they\u2019re moving their skid steer and track loader manufacturing from\u00a0Dubuque, Iowa, to a new facility in Ramos, Mexico<\/a>, and confirmed plans to build a\u00a0US$55 million plant in Nuevo Le\u00f3n<\/a>\u00a0to manufacture mini track loaders and mini wheel loaders.<\/p>\n

Trump has said Deere\u2019s new facilities as a win for U.S. manufacturing, announcing the projects at a January\u00a0rally<\/a>\u00a0and on\u00a0social media<\/a>. The White House also highlighted Deere\u2019s U.S. projects as part of a list of\u00a0new investments<\/a>\u00a0during Trump\u2019s second term as evidence of the President\u2019s \u201cunwavering commitment to revitalizing American industry.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, the groundwork for both projects had been laid in 2024 under the Biden-Harris administration. Deere\u2019s planned expansion in Kernersville was first announced in 2024, according to\u00a0Reuters<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Plans for the Indiana site trace back to a\u00a0land acquisition<\/a>\u00a0that same year, which details the purchase of a 234-acre undeveloped parcel in northwest Indiana that \u201cwill be the future site of a 1.2-million-square-foot John Deere warehouse\/distribution.\u201d When asked about the timing, the company\u00a0noted<\/a>\u00a0that some of these plans had been disclosed earlier.<\/p>\n

Deere has indicated that its long-term strategy will continue \u201cregardless<\/a>\u201d of political developments in the U.S.. But policy changes under the Trump-Vance administration are proving expensive. According to The Wall Street Journal, Deere incurred roughly\u00a0US$600 million<\/a>\u00a0in tariff-related costs in its 2025 fiscal year and expects that figure to climb to about\u00a0US$1.2 billion<\/a>\u00a0this year.<\/p>\n

The broader equipment manufacturing sector is also facing headwinds:\u00a0output and employment have declined<\/a>\u00a0from 2022 levels, according to the Association of Equipment Manufacturers, prompting concerns about the long-term trajectory of U.S. production. \u201cThe path that we are on is leading us to less manufacturing in the United States,\u201d says Kip Eideberg, the Association\u2019s Senior Vice President of Government and Industry Relations.<\/p>\n

The workers being called back represent a small but significant reprieve for communities hit hard by recent layoffs. \u201cWhen those layoffs are announced, it doesn\u2019t just throw the family\u2014it throws an entire town into confusion and chaos and worry,\u201d\u00a0explains<\/a>\u00a0Charlie Wishman, President of the Iowa AFL-CIO.<\/p>\n

But for many others, the damage remains: Deere\u2019s sweeping changes to its U.S. workforce have sparked both\u00a0uncertainty<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0outrage<\/a>, leaving\u00a0hundreds of families<\/a>\u00a0questioning how they will pay rent, put food on the table, and find new sources of income.<\/p>\n
