{"id":58302,"date":"2026-04-23T06:00:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T11:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/foodtank.com\/?p=58302"},"modified":"2026-04-24T08:09:30","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T13:09:30","slug":"fighting-corporate-control-of-fisheries-namas-vision-for-blue-food-systems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/foodtank.com\/news\/2026\/04\/fighting-corporate-control-of-fisheries-namas-vision-for-blue-food-systems\/","title":{"rendered":"Fighting Corporate Control of Fisheries: NAMA\u2019s Vision for Blue Food Systems"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The North American Marine Alliance (NAMA) is pushing back against corporate control of fisheries to build vibrant, community-driven blue food systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a tendency to separate aquatic and terrestrial food systems, but Niaz Dorry, Coordinating Director for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.namanet.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NAMA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sees the same trends shaping the two.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat has affected the world&#8217;s ability to feed itself and communities in a sovereign way to feed themselves, is we&#8217;ve taken land away and commodified it,\u201d Dorry says. \u201cWe&#8217;ve taken fishing rights away and commodified it. We&#8217;ve taken seeds away and commodified it. We&#8217;ve now taken the water column away and commodified it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasing consolidation is posing additional challenges, affecting both farmed and wild fisheries. \u201cOur food is being dominated by these industrial operations,\u201d says Dorry, who worries about the companies like Cargill and ConAgra that are moving into the aquaculture sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This results in seafood and land-based agriculture systems that are designed for those \u201cwho can produce the most at the lowest cost of production to feed global economies of scale,\u201d Dorry says. And that doesn\u2019t bode well for the health and wellness of communities. \u201cThos are two completely different priorities,\u201d she states.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But NAMA believes it doesn\u2019t have to stay this way. \u201cThe world was fully capable and is fully capable of feeding itself\u2026Let&#8217;s give people their seeds back. Let&#8217;s give people their land back, their fishing rights back,\u201d Dorry tells Food Tank. &#8220;Let&#8217;s recreate that regional food system in order to feed ourselves and not make anything other than feeding ourselves good food inevitable.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The organization is a steering committee member of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dontcageouroceans.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t Cage Our Oceans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> campaign, which is fighting against the threat of offshore industrial fish farming in the United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also convene the Catch Share Reform Coalition, which advocates for policies that center the priorities of small fishers.
