S\u00e1nchez, a soil scientist whose career reshaped tropical agriculture and strengthened global food security, died on January 12, 2026. He was 85.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPedro S\u00e1nchez was a scientist of rare vision and deep humanity,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldfoodprize.org\/index.cfm\/87428\/49419\/world_food_prize_foundation_remembers_pedro_sanchez_2002_laureate_and_global_agriculture_pioneer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.worldfoodprize.org\/index.cfm\/87428\/49419\/world_food_prize_foundation_remembers_pedro_sanchez_2002_laureate_and_global_agriculture_pioneer&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1769267191779000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0TtomOuJ2g8AVbkalfncJ8\">says<\/a>\u00a0Mashal Husain, President of the World Food Prize Foundation. \u201cHe understood that research matters most when it reaches farmers\u2019 fields, restores dignity, and creates lasting opportunities for communities that have been overlooked for far too long.\u201d S\u00e1nchez devoted more than six decades to restoring degraded soils and advancing agricultural systems that improved livelihoods for smallholder farmers across Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n<p>A native of Cuba, he grew up on his family\u2019s farm outside Havana, traveling the country with his father, an agronomist. After earning his bachelor\u2019s, master\u2019s, and doctoral degrees from Cornell University, S\u00e1nchez began his academic career at North Carolina State University, where he helped establish the Tropical Soils Research Program. His early work demonstrated how acid tropical soils in Brazil\u2019s Cerrado could become productive farmland and helped develop alternatives to slash-and-burn agriculture in the Peruvian Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez later held leadership roles at major international research institutions, including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irri.org\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.irri.org\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1769267191779000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3xg_L7OQhx4MyX_r04akAV\">International Rice Research Institute<\/a>\u00a0in the Philippines and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/es\/publisher\/fee3882f-5360-4f01-a1ca-767c48fa629c\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.gbif.org\/es\/publisher\/fee3882f-5360-4f01-a1ca-767c48fa629c&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1769267191779000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3AUQe3EpgD7pvr14whKT08\">Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical<\/a>\u00a0in Colombia.<\/p>\n<p>From 1991 to 2001, he served as director general of the World Agroforestry Centre in Nairobi, where he helped\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cifor-icraf.org\/news\/corporate-news\/in-memory-of-former-icraf-director-general-dr-pedro-a-sanchez\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cifor-icraf.org\/news\/corporate-news\/in-memory-of-former-icraf-director-general-dr-pedro-a-sanchez\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1769267191779000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2UZyZmprmJ5RsvQZa4rzqh\">elevate agroforestry as a core strategy<\/a>\u00a0for sustainable development. Under his leadership, the organization evolved into a globally respected scientific institution, emphasizing farmer-centered, landscape-scale approaches.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving Nairobi, S\u00e1nchez joined Columbia University\u2019s Earth Institute, where he directed programs linking soil science to global development goals. As co-chair of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/unterm.un.org\/unterm2\/en\/view\/a9559fa0-2d6a-4f53-8454-e5e08434c0e4\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/unterm.un.org\/unterm2\/en\/view\/a9559fa0-2d6a-4f53-8454-e5e08434c0e4&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1769267191780000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1WDGbHZvVOexEn8mFjgSlx\">United Nations Millennium Project Hunger Task Force<\/a>, he helped demonstrate that investments in soil fertility could double or triple food production across diverse agroecological zones in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, he joined the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifas.ufl.edu\/swsdept\/2026\/01\/13\/pedro-sanchez\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/blogs.ifas.ufl.edu\/swsdept\/2026\/01\/13\/pedro-sanchez\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1769267191780000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2wAPQ04CkKsGt1O5U7zQvI\">University of Florida<\/a>\u00a0as a research professor, where he taught graduate courses in tropical soils and continued mentoring young scientists. S\u00e1nchez authored the textbook\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/properties-and-management-of-soils-in-the-tropics\/1247CD9DA3CE918D8C364317617C1E87\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/properties-and-management-of-soils-in-the-tropics\/1247CD9DA3CE918D8C364317617C1E87&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1769267191780000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1mRnjtpah3IGn4HWmRFvkZ\"><em>Properties and Management of Soils in the Tropics<\/em><\/a>, first published in 1987 and revised in 2019, which remains\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/abs\/properties-and-management-of-soils-in-the-tropics\/reviews\/1E4E37FC2E1080798F28044F5E77D57C\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/books\/abs\/properties-and-management-of-soils-in-the-tropics\/reviews\/1E4E37FC2E1080798F28044F5E77D57C&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1769267191780000&amp;usg=AOvVaw0zctetEPwP8pFvcICEjdFq\">widely used<\/a>\u00a0in courses on tropical soils worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>His work earned international recognition, including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldfoodprize.org\/en\/laureates\/20002009_laureates\/2002_sanchez\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.worldfoodprize.org\/en\/laureates\/20002009_laureates\/2002_sanchez\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1769267191780000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3DMC9y2Z6DBzRqSvvCTBdc\">World Food Prize<\/a>\u00a0in 2002, a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.macfound.org\/fellows\/class-of-2003\/pedro-sanchez\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.macfound.org\/fellows\/class-of-2003\/pedro-sanchez&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1769267191780000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1YeWEy1dGgNKl_U_yt6uI9\">MacArthur Fellowship<\/a>\u00a0in 2004, and election to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/news.climate.columbia.edu\/2012\/05\/02\/pedro-sanchez-elected-into-the-national-academy-of-sciences\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/news.climate.columbia.edu\/2012\/05\/02\/pedro-sanchez-elected-into-the-national-academy-of-sciences\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1769267191780000&amp;usg=AOvVaw25eb6zkmN1NQ_rTdPbLfju\">U.S. National Academy of Sciences<\/a>. Upon receiving the World Food Prize, S\u00e1nchez and his wife and scientific partner, Dr. Cheryl Palm, committed the award funds to support farmers and scientists working to eradicate hunger in lower-income contexts.<\/p>\n<p>Despite his many accolades, those who worked with S\u00e1nchez often point first to his character.<\/p>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez\u2019s contributions to today\u2019s agronomic knowledge and the welfare of millions of smallholder farm households are immense, Thom Jayne, Foundation Professor emeritus of Agricultural, Food, and Resource Economics at Michigan State University, tells Food Tank. \u201cAs massive as those contributions are, what impressed me even more was his radiant warmth, altruism, and courageous heart,\u201d Jayne says. \u201cEquity and fairness mattered deeply to him. It was an honor to collaborate with Pedro and his partner, Cheryl Palm. Together, they stood up for African organizations and gave selflessly of their time and energy to support African-led agricultural research systems.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was a humble giant among people,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ifas.ufl.edu\/swsdept\/2026\/01\/13\/pedro-sanchez\/\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/blogs.ifas.ufl.edu\/swsdept\/2026\/01\/13\/pedro-sanchez\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1769267191780000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2wAPQ04CkKsGt1O5U7zQvI\">says<\/a>\u00a0Jack M. Payne, former University of Florida Senior Vice President for Agriculture and Natural Resources.<\/p>\n<p>S\u00e1nchez passed away two years after the death of Palm.
